An awesome form of self defense is using your cell phone to call 911 and have the police come save your life. Yet, calling the police is something we all hesitate to do. Today’s blog illustrates this dilemma.

Recently, after school an upper classmen in High School was walking home. Normally, it was safe walk and mishap free. Today, she was being followed by 3 boys from her school who started kicking rocks at her. Several times she stopped to see if they were really kicking rocks at her and to let them pass. Each time she stopped, they stopped, and would not leave. She was extremely uneasy to being followed, and the rocks were getting dangerously close. Her mind was becoming frightened, panicky, and rational thought was shutting down. The first sign of trouble would have been a good time to call 911. There was distance between them and time to call for help. With the passing of time, reaction time, and effective self defense options were passing away.

With each rock kicked, no danger offered to the attacking boys, one became emboldened. He took it to the next level and proceeded to throwing rocks at her. One rock hit her in the head and luckily the other two boys decided it was time to stop it. They ran off, leaving her wounded. Like in the Dark Ages, rocks thrown by attacking people  kill;  there is no effective individual self defense for it.

This attack took place close to the High School, in a good neighborhood, and with other students walking home. It was broad daylight, she didn’t have far to go, and “who’d of ever thought there would be a problem”? She was by herself and   for self defense would have to deal with 3 males.  Not good odds for anyone with martial arts training.

On the positive side, she had spotted them, and her instincts made her aware of the danger. NOW was the time to be looking around for help and getting her cell phone out. When the first rock came at her, she should have been dialing 911. Help would have been on the way and she wouldn’t have had to worry about self defense.

The police probably would have arrived before the rock hit her head. If they arrived afterwards, they might have caught the attackers. The bottom line is, this is a job for the police. Call them and let them keep you safe and deal with the problem. A great line of self defense is using your cell phone to call the police. While we may hesitate to “cause a scene” and call them, they are happy to come to your aid. Let them do their job - CALL THEM.

Stay safe out there,

Instructor Scott
