Did You Ever Think Craig’s List Could Lead to Rape?

Who’d of thought you’d need to know self defense on the internet? Listed on Craig’s List was a free iPod if you went to a public park and retrieved it from the bathroom. Common sense and experience would tell you something isn’t right about this offer. After all, anytime you’re offered something for free, you need to beware. AND, public bathrooms in parks are not where you go shopping for iPods.
In this case a young lady was foolish enough to go to the park for the free iPod. This is why we need to constantly talk with our kids and monitor their activities (teaching a martial art would be good too). All they may be focused on is “a free iPod”. Luckily, she noticed a man sitting in his car intently watching the bathroom. After a lengthy time passed, her apprehensions finally motivated her to call the police.
They quickly arrived, searched the man’s car, which resulted in his arrest. Apparently he came to the rendezvous with ropes, gloves, ski mask (it was the middle of summer), a realistic plastic gun, and a knife. Further investigations revealed internet research on how to perform a rape, videos he’d made practicing for a rape, and his diary professing how he longed to rape. At his jury trial, prosecutors presented overwhelming evidence to gain a guilty verdict. The weapons in his possession were beyond the norm for self defense and indicative of his intent to use them for deadly bodily harm. It’s up to the judge at sentencing, but he may be put away for up to 15 years. Let’s hope he gets the maximum sentence.
This story had a happy ending in it for the young lady and we can all learn from it. Can you imagine how it could have turned out if she’d approached the bathroom and he had time to get out of his car? In the world of self defense, it would be hard to defend herself from him, and he’d also brought a gun (although fake) and a knife. Even if she knew a martial art, all of this would be almost overwhelming. Common sense did kick in; she was able to avoid the situation by not going near the scene, and calling the police.
Without knowing it, she used the best form of self defense, which is avoidance. If you avoid dangerous situations, then you won’t be there when things go bad. And if they do go bad and you don’t have 10 years to earn your black belt, then our 10 lesson self defense class is what you need. Ask me for more details.
